How do Braces Work?

Braces are a type of orthodontic therapy that is used to realign the teeth and jaws. They are made of of metal brackets and wires that are affixed to the teeth and work together to apply pressure to the teeth, gradually shifting them into the correct position over time.
Metal or ceramic brackets are commonly used and are bonded to the front of each tooth. The arch wire is then run through the brackets and applied to the teeth to apply pressure. The wire is normally constructed of metal, although it can also be formed of titanium or heat-activated nickel titanium.

Elastic or metal ties, or a mix of the two, secure the wire in the brackets. An orthodontist adjusts the arch wire on a regular basis to maintain consistent pressure on the teeth and guide them into the ideal position.
Braces operate by applying a constant, moderate strain to the teeth, causing the bones that support them to alter shape. This is known as remodeling, and it allows the teeth to gradually migrate into the appropriate position.

A comprehensive braces treatment often takes 18-24 months, depending on the particular situation and degree of the misalignment.
